A second-half penalty from Diego Forlan gave Atletico Madrid the lead, but Borja Valero's goal in extra time restored parity for Real Mallorca, who had been reduced to nine men early in the second period. The hosts could have got ahead on three minutes as Ramis brought down Diego Forlan in the area, but the referee failed to signal a penalty.Atletico were first to create danger, on five minutes, when Aguero chipped the ball into the six-yard box to Maxi Rodriguez, who had just Aouate to beat but he could not connect to it cleanly.Mallorca managed to respond to Atletico's good start, and had a chance on 24 minutes. Ujfalusi was dispossessed in his side's own half, allowing Castro to pick up the ball and pass it to Webo, whose shot went wide of the right post. Two minutes later, Mallorca were reduced to ten men as Josemi was shown his second yellow card for a hand ball inside the area. Forlan spurned the penalty opportunity as he missed his shot to the right. The first period ended with the score line untouched. Atletico, who had enjoyed 65 per cent of possession, could not make use of the opportunities they had created, the most important being the penalty. The second half began with another penalty for Atletico, as Ramis blocked Forlan's cross from the left side of the box with his hand, and was sent off. Forlan this time made no mistake and sent Aouate the wrong way from the spot. The home side almost doubled their lead in the 63rd minute, when Simao Sabrosa's cross from the left was aimed at Maxi Rodriguez, who was unmarked but he could not get his head to the ball.Atletico turned on the heat and had two good chances to score in the 76th minute. Simao's low shot from the right was denied by Aouate, while Reyes, who had been brought on just minutes before, saw his effort blocked by a defender before going over the bar.The hosts kept finding plenty of spaces as Mallorca went in search of the equaliser, but they could never apply the finishing touch. In the 85th minute, Antonio Lopez's cross from the left found Cleber, who jumped alone but his header went over the bar.Mallorca went close to levelling the match three minutes from stoppage time. Corrales crossed the ball from the left into the box, De Gea rushed out of his zone to get to it but Webo rose higher, only to see his header go slightly wide. And the visitors finally found the back of the net in the 90th minute. A free-kick from the right whipped into the box found Borja Valero at the far post, who chested it down and attempted to pass the ball across the face of the goal, De Gea tried to get his hands on the ball but he ended up putting it inside his own goal.It was a well-deserved point for Mallorca, who refused to lower their heads even when reduced to nine men. As for Atletico, new boss Quique Flores, who was on the stands, has certainly realised there is plenty of work to do.
